The Cinema Audio Society has, over the years had varying degrees of success forecasting the Oscars. They have three categories, but only one correlates to the Oscars and that’s the one for live-action films. Here are our predictions in those categories just in time for the awards Saturday night.

CINEMA AUDIO SOCIETY AWARDS

Best Sound Mixing – Live Action

Baby Driver (Peter, RU:Wesley, RU:Tripp, RU:Thomas)
Dunkirk (Wesley, Tripp, Thomas, RU:Peter)
Star Wars: The Last Jedi
The Shape of Water
Wonder Woman

Wesley Lovell: Go with the Oscar frontrunner when all else fails. Dunkirk wins, though Baby Driver could surprise thanks to its terrific soundtrack.
Peter J. Patrick: As with the Oscars, this seems to be a choice between innovation and tradition. I give the edge to innovation with Baby Driver over the traditional sounds of Dunkirk.
Tripp Burton: This seems to be between Dunkirk and Baby Driver, and I’m really not sure which one will win.
Thomas LaTourette: I am thinking that either the war movie or the film that has music as a driving force will win. I will lean towards Dunkirk, but would not be surprised by a Baby Driver win.

Best Sound Mixing – Animated

Cars 3
Coco (Wesley, Peter, Tripp, Thomas)
Despicable Me 3 (RU:Thomas)
Ferdinand (RU:Peter)
The Lego Batman Movie (RU:Wesley, RU:Tripp)

Wesley Lovell: Coco has won everything under the sun, so I expect nothing less here. The Lego Batman Movie probably has the most variable sound with its musical elements.
Peter J. Patrick: Coco should emerge as victorious here as it has everywhere else.
Tripp Burton: When in doubt, go with Coco.
Thomas LaTourette: With its heavy use of music, Coco should be the frontrunner for this award.

Best Sound Mixing – Documentary

An Inconvenient Truth: Truth to Power (RU:Peter)
Eric Clapton: Life in 12 Bars (RU:Thomas)
Gaga: Five Feet Two (Thomas, RU:Wesley, RU:Tripp)
Jane (Wesley, Peter)
Long Strange Trip (Tripp)

Wesley Lovell: I really have no idea what to expect. This group has gone for music-oriented documentaries before, but Jane seems like the kind of film that they could recognize.
Peter J. Patrick: I’ve had pretty good luck predicting Jane for awards wins so far, so I’m sticking with her, with the sequel to 2006’s An Inconvenient Truth its closest competition here.
Tripp Burton: I’m guessing one of the music docs wins.
Thomas LaTourette: One of the three music documentaries should probably win. I will guess Gaga first, Clapton second, and the Grateful Dead in third for the Long Strange Trip.
