The Costume Designers Guild recognizes the best in costume design for the year and, being broken into three categories, has three opportunities to try and correctly predict the Oscars. This year, there’s only two as none of the contemporary nominees made it to the Oscar nominations and the two biggest competitors, Phantom Thread and Beauty and the Beast aren’t in the same category here, meaning this won’t do much clarification for Oscar prognostication purposes.

If either title loses, its chances at the Oscars drop, so we’ll see how they vote to determine whether we need to adjust our predictions or not.

COSTUME DESIGNERS GUILD AWARDS

Best Period Costume Design

Dunkirk
The Greatest Showman
Murder on the Orient Express (RU:Thomas)
Phantom Thread (Wesley, Peter, Tripp, Thomas)
The Shape of Water (RU:Wesley, RU:Peter, RU:Tripp)

Wesley Lovell: For costume designers, could a film about designing gowns be a winner? It’s very likely, though if the voters don’t particularly care for the garments, it could be The Shape of Water, also an Oscar nominee or one of the non-nominees: The Greatest Showman or Murder on the Orient Express, neither of which would be surprising, but they wouldn’t help clarify the Oscar race.
Peter J. Patrick: With the art of dressmaking front an center, it would seem that Phantom Thread would be up their alley.
Tripp Burton: The film about fashion seems like the safest bet in this category, unless love for The Shape of Water carries over here. The dark horse could be The Greatest Showman, which has a lot of love around Hollywood.
Thomas LaTourette: With Phantom Thread being set in the fashion industry, it would seem a safe bet for it to win this category. The elegant costumes of Murder on the Orient Express probably give it its strongest competition, but Phantom Thread seems likely to win.

Best Fantasy Costume Design

Beauty and the Beast (Wesley, Peter, Tripp, Thomas)
Blade Runner 2049 (RU:Wesley, RU:Tripp)
Star Wars: The Last Jedi
Thor: Ragnarok (RU:Thomas)
Wonder Woman (RU:Peter)

Wesley Lovell: I don’t really see the bountiful costumes of Beauty and the Beast losing here, especially as I consider it the Oscar frontrunner. Still, a surprise could be in the works if they go for one of the other titles with Blade Runner 2049 and Wonder Woman the most likely potential upsetters.
Peter J. Patrick: This seems to be a race between the best designs which were those for Beauty and the Beast and the hippest designs which were those for Wonder Woman. It could go either way.
Tripp Burton: Beauty and the Beast is the only Oscar nominee on this list and feels like the safest bet.
Thomas LaTourette: The gorgeous costumes of Beauty and the Beast should easily win this category.

Best Contemporary Costume Design

Get Out
I, Tonya (Wesley, Tripp, Thomas)
Kingsman: The Golden Circle (RU:Wesley, RU:Tripp, RU:Thomas)
Lady Bird (RU:Peter)
Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri (Peter)

Wesley Lovell: The costumes of the three Best Picture nominees on this list aren’t particularly memorable and they aren’t bountiful. Some case could be made for the fact that they are Oscar nominees, but I suspect it will come down to the two non-Best Picture nominees on the list, both of which have a ton of bold costumes to catch the viewer’s attention. I lean towards I, Tonya simply because the period represented is far enough back to be interesting and because it gives us a chance to look back and recoil. With all of the sequined outfits for the skating performances, each needing to re-create what Tonya Harding wore, and you have something a bit more challenging and thus appealing to these voters. Of course, the Stetson-meets-Saville Row couture of Kingsman is bold and declarative and quite distinctive, which could be a benefit with these voters.
Peter J. Patrick: None of these nominees had really outstanding costumes which suggests that this will go to whichever film the voters like best.
Tripp Burton: The 90s costumes of I, Tonya are probably the leader of the pack here.
Thomas LaTourette: The costumes of I, Tonya were talked about enough in the movie that they may win. If not, perhaps the dapper suits of Kingsman will.
