The 20 films that advance to the final race for Best Visual Effects are a solid bunch with a few minor surprises, but a surprising number of these seem like strong contenders. A few can be eliminated, but not enough to truly get down to 5.

LOS ANGELES, CA โ€“ The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences today announced that 20 films are in the running in the Visual Effects category for the 91st Academy Awardsยฎ.

The films are listed below in alphabetical order:

The Academyโ€™s Visual Effects Branch Executive Committee determined the preliminary list of films eligible for further awards consideration. Later this month, the committee will select a shortlist of 10 films that will advance to nominations voting.

Nominations for the 91st Academy Awards will be announced on Tuesday, January 22, 2019.

The 91st Oscarsยฎ will be held on Sunday, February 24, 2019, at the Dolby Theatreยฎ at Hollywood & Highland Centerยฎ in Hollywood, and will be televised live on the ABC Television Network. The Oscars also will be televised live in more than 225 countries and territories worldwide.
