High in concept and filled with Baz Luhrmann's lavish flair, Australia looks like it could be a masterpiece or it could be the next Cold Mountain. It can be easily compared to both Cold Mountain and to Gone With the Wind, however I'm not certain which direction it will go after this trailer.
With his history of flare blended with substance, it might be a fair thing to say that Baz Luhrmann has a great shot at making an epic go smoothly. However, the trailer either has been poorly cobbled together or this will be an unmitigated disaster. I can see some kernels of greatness in the trailer, so I'll give Baz the benefit of the doubt, but it will take a lot to impress me considering this trailer.
Cinematography, Art Direction, Costume Design and Sound Mixing are definite possibilities as are Original Score and Editing and even Best Picture, Actor, Actress and Director. It all depends on whether it sinks or swims with critics.
A melange of genres brought together with a questionable opening, but a satisfying conclusion.
