Famed poet John Keats begins a tempestuous three-year romance with seamstress Fanny Brawne despite their social inequalities which threaten to tear them apart.
It's not your typical romantic poster, being in close up, but it has a quiet sultriness that may help draw female audiences to the theater. What it lacks in detail, it makes up for in sexiness.
It's been a long time since I've seen Jane Campion deliver something that looks this compelling. The cinematography is gorgeous, the set design and costumes are extremely good and the story has a significant amount of promise.
With good reviews at the end of the year and a few awards, this could be Campion's return to the limelight. Even if Best Picture, Actor, Actress, Director and Screenplay aren't picked up, I'm fairly certain it will still land nods for Art Direction and Costume Design and maybe even for Original Score, Editing and Cinematography.
A lush romantic drama where the best elements are the least romantic.
