A documentary about n inner-city garden in Los Angeles that is to be bulldozed because of some backroom deals carried out by a councilwoman and the fight of the people of the community to keep her from succeeding.
It's so incredibly simple that it works. A small garden in the middle of a vast wasteland of space perfectly describes the garden of the documentary, making it an evocative selection even though it won't likely appeal to too many and even fewer will understand the concept.
When I first read the synopsis of the film, it didn't seem like Academy fodder in the least. However, seeing the actual trailer, I can easily understand why it was recognized as it casts a light on political corruption that intrigues many of us as well as several members of the Academy.
Already an Oscar nominee, so it won't becompeting in 2009.
I have not seen this film.
