Preview: Public Enemies (2009)

Synopsis:

The story of legendary bank robber John Dillinger and his capture and subsequent escape.

Review:

Pretty innocuous, the selling point here, obviously, is Johnny Depp whose face bears a look of disinterest, rather than one of contemplation, villainy, thoughtfulness or any other emotion on display in the trailer, but this poster almost perfectly captures the utter ennui I feel when I'm faced with a new Depp creation.

Review:

Unlike many trailers for the crime genre, this one seems rather bland and lacking in richness. The sets look nice, but they are so gray and boring that the performances displayed are a direct match to their drabness.

Oscar Prospects:

There will be talk that this film should bring both Michael Mann and Johnny Depp Oscars, but as it's releasing in July and I can't see it being a huge box office sensation, it may very well end up like many of Mann's other films. Depp may earn a nod, but I am doubtful he'll pick up an Oscar.
