Preview: Rudo y Cursi (2009)

Synopsis:

Two soccer-playing brothers find the opportunity of a lifetime as they are discovered and move to the big city to play professional soccer, only to find out that their intense personal rivalry isn't the only thing that will hold them back from success.

Review:

Other than a slight homage to the night club singing Gael Garcia Bernal does in the film, this poster is garish and cheesy and doesn't seem to really say a lot about the film, except that it may be garish and cheesy.

• Trailer: C+

Review:

Bernal is one of the most interesting Hispanic actors of his generation and I can't help but be amused by his desire and attempts to execute a singing career, but otherwise, the film looks a bit uninteresting. If it is entirely a comedy, it might work, but the trailer doesn't say for sure and it could very easily be a straight drama, which won't work so well.

Oscar Prospects:

Bernal isn't going to get his big Oscar break here.
