Preview: Cyrus (2010)

Synopsis:

An inept middle aged man finds a slightly younger, attractive woman whose grown son lives with her and promises to prevent the two from every successfully getting together.

Review:

Although it's fairly plain, I give the creator credit for making a symbolically representative poster. For once, the actors are getting into the spirit without being posed. Jonah Hill's smirk sells it.

• Trailer: C+

Review:

What doesn't sell the film is just how pedestrian it all looks. Not only does it feel quite similar to many of John C. Reilly's more popular and broadly comic films, but the trailer seems to promise that kind of style without delivering it.

Oscar Prospects:

Mid-summer is the perfect time to get lost for Oscar consideration, so don't expect to see much more of this one.
