A modern update to the classic '80s coming-of-age story about a young boy and his rise above the bullies as a martial artist.
There really is nothing of interest here. Yes, we get it. This is a movie about a kid doing martial arts. It could have been more interesting.
It's nothing that we weren't expecting, deconstructing and not rebuilding what made the original film great. Even though Jackie Chan seems to have toned things down (at least according to the trailer), he's still a poor replacement for the late Noriyuki "Pat" Morita.
It's amazing how many different races and cultures have such similar bullying tactics in their schools. First the Vulcans and now the Chinese. Boy, am I glad I'm not in school anymore. Apart from the rather lame American-centric homogenization of school yard antics, the film lacks the charm of the original.
