Preview: The Wolfman (2010)

Synopsis:

A remake of the classic horror film about a man bitten by a werewolf and how it affects the lives of those around him.

Review:

These posters share one common trait. They aren't great, but have elements of greatness. The black-and-white version is a bit too stylized and lacks depth. The only color on the poster in the brown iris is hokey.

The poster featuring the denizens of the film is a bit more viewable than the former, but it is so staid and unexceptional, it's almost as bad.

Review:

Other than a suitably atmospheric design, the film looks like a modestly weak attempt to adapt a classic to a modern audience. It reminds me a good deal of what they're trying to do with Sherlock Holmes.

While the atmosphere is far more thrilling than the first preview, the content is more lackluster suggesting they abandoned the classic styling of the subject in favor of a more action-oriented flick. This will be a good companion with the reinvisioning of Sherlock Holmes.

Oscar Prospects:

Releasing in February is the best time to keep the film from getting remembered at Oscar time in 2011. And since the similarly gothic Van Helsing was roundly ignored by the Academy, I fully expect this one to be as well, unless it can sneak in a Makeup nomination.
