Acclaimed filmmaker Werner Herzog tackles the dynamics of death and murder as it exists between criminal and the criminal justice system.
A subtle, simple image works incredibly well for documentaries about such dire situations. There isn't a desire to over-embellish and you get a full understanding of the film's subject and theme through a modicum of mental effort.
Herzog is a visual stylist first and a documentarian second. The delicate balance he must walk in presenting murderers and death row and the impact and dangers of execution.
Herzog's prior documentary cracked a heavy field of films, so I can definitely see this one competing.
I have not seen this film.
