Preview: The Princess fo Montpensier (2011)

Synopsis:

Bethrothed to a young prince, a free spirited princess seeks to escape the confines of her society by trying to form a relationship with a roguish duke.

Review:

THis set up is fairly common, but I always love when posters form love triangles between three characters by putting the inferior one in the background between the two fated lovers. When done well, as in this poster, it doesn't have the feeling of being forced making a more pleasing visual.

• Trailer: B-

Review:

The film seems like a common narrative of the rebellious young woman seeking a relationship based on love, not political necessity. The trailer doesn't do a great job of convincing the audience there's more than the standard here, but should appeal to costume drama fans.

Oscar Prospects:

Films like this, although they would compete well in costume and art direction categories, will be unlikely to even see that stage of the competition simply because foreign films aren't that commonly included.
