Preview: The Rum Diary (2011)

Synopsis:

A down-on-his-luck journalist finds himself with a job in the Caribbean where he must contend with apathy in his own newspaper before being able to successfully complete his job.

Review:

It's a brazen design that quickly sums up the lead character without much effort. It's a bit heavy on the design flourishes, but it works well enough.

• Trailer: C

Review:

I haven't been a fan of Johnny Depp in a long time and this looks a bit like his Captain Jack Sparrow character perhaps with a little more clarity. However, the trailer looks goofy enough and it's nice to see him break away from Tim Burton again that it could be a nice diversion.

Oscar Prospects:

I'm sure there will be some small talk of Depp for an Oscar nomination, but I think the film will ultimately fizzle out before then. A screenwriting nomination might be possible as well.
