Preview: Snow Flower and the Secret Fan (2011)

Synopsis:

Tells an old story of two childhood friends who grew up sharing their lives through their own secret language.

Review:

There is a subtlety to this poster the delights the eye. The smallest glimpse of writing on the blades of the fan adds a dash of charm to the package, which is suffers only from being a bit too red.

• Trailer: C+

Review:

The scarlet theme carries heavily into the trailer, with several beautiful set pieces and costumes in that hue. There isn't enough substance in the trailer to give the audience much idea what type of film they would be seeing, which makes it a bit harder to sell.

Oscar Prospects:

Wayne Wang's The Joy Luck Club unfortunately did not win any Oscars (it wasn't even nominated, even though it should have been). This one might be a dark horse nominee for Art Direction and/or Costume Design, but I expect the same fate as befell his 1993 picture.
