POSTERS

Preview: Sucker Punch (2011)

Synopsis:

Taken to a home for the criminally insane, a young woman fights to escape her prison using the very tools they have taught her.

  • Poster: B+ (All)

Review:

Each poster is designed similarly, but with vastly different backgrounds and slight tinges of color. These will do exactly what the producers want: seduce teens and young men, sell batches of posters, and draw people to the theater.

  • Trailer: B+; C+

Review:

Despite knowing that the film is going to be borderline mediocre, Zach Snyder's films have lush visuals that many other filmmakers should hope to emulate. Now, if only he could balance plot and performance with spectacle and he might become a better filmmaker.

Despite the stellar first trailer, the film is looking less interesting as the previews go on. My eyes kind of glazed over halfway through the trailer with too much visual stimulus. And the plot seems rather limited from what's explained in this trailer, so it might be best to return to the more mysterious first trailer for advertising.

Oscar Prospects:

Although Snyder's films have been beautiful to behold, he has yet to turn his films into Oscar contenders. I doubt another March release will bolster that lack of a total.
