Two men. One a hero ex-Marine. One a teacher and loyal husband and father. Both want one thing: to become a champion and take home the grand prize of a prominent Mixed Martial Arts competition.
It's a bit too sexy for the type of audience this film hopes to draw. Still, those who won't necessarily be turned on by the concept, may be turned on by the poster making a terrific one-two punch in cross-audience attraction.
I don't know that there's a competition film around that hasn't drawn similar inspiration as this trailer. Regardless of that fact, there's a reason those old films found success with that formula. Painting two underdogs into a fighting film should appeal to plenty of potential ticket buyers.
It seems like just the right kind of film to take The Fighter's road to the Oscars. I don't think there will be acting nominations as the competition for those categories seems rather strong this year; however, Best Picture, Best Original Screenplay and especially Best Editing are all solid prospects.
I have not seen this film.
