Preview: China Heavyweight (2012)


A Chinese trainer takes the young children of farmers and trains them to compete in the American-style boxing arena.

I often shake my head at how unnecessarily plain a lot of documentary posters can be. While I wouldn't want them to be as painfully oblique as some independent films' designs are, something more colorful and entertaining would be an improvement.

I'm not much of a documentary watcher, so take my comments with a grain of salt. The film doesn't look disinteresting, but it's not a movie I'd go out of my way to see.

Oscar Prospects:

The documentary's director Yung Chang had a well received doc five years ago called Up the Yangtzee. Many thought it might even become an Oscar nominee, but it never made the final cut. The same may happen to this film, but it may have a better position with all the rules changes to that category in the five years since.
