Preview: Do-Deca-Pentathlon (2012)

An old pair of middle-aged friends decide to compete in a series of 25 events they dreamed up when they were younger just to see who has the more satisfying life.

As much as the trailer makes this look like a film I want to avoid, this poster makes it look somewhat clever. I won't say the design is something new or original, but it's different enough from its compatriots in the market place that it could make enough curious to check it out.

  • Trailer: C-

First, the title is a complete misnomer. A pentathlon, being a five-event race, combined with "dodeca-" which means 12, would mean there would be either 17 events if they are adding or 60 events if multiplying. I'm a bit rusty on my latin bases, but it appears the filmmakers are too and that's part of my dislike of the trailer. It seems like the film is going out of its way to be independently-zany while failing to genuinely engage the audience in whatever life-altering competition they are about to contend.

Oscar Prospects:

I don't even think the film's going to show at the Spirit Awards. Look for another Duplass film, Jeff Who, Lives at Home to do better.
