Preview: Footnote (2012)

Father and son Talmudic Studies professors have a strained relationship which stretches to the snapping point when a prestious awards body mistakenly informs the father he's won an award that the son actually did.

  • Poster: C+

Awash in a sea of papers may have meaning to those familiar with the Talmud, but most regular audiences are going to be expecting some manner of surreal foreign language film looking at this poster. If it gets them to the theater, so be it, but I'm not so sure it will be that enticing once they see the trailer.

  • Trailer: B-

The idea feels a bit fresher than a lot of what's out there, but the trailer is so dreadfully boring that it almost causes the viewer to lose track of what's going on. The fact that it's on a rather unfamiliar topic to a lot of audiences won't add to the mystery, it will simply add to the disinterest.

Oscar Prospects:

The film was nominated for Best Foreign Language film at the 84th Academy Awards, losing to Iranian film A Separation.
