Preview: The Imposter (2012)

A documentary based on both real world testimony and staged re-enactments examines the disappears of a twelve-year-old who suddenly reappears three years later, but may not be who he claims to be.

  • Poster: B

Anyone looking at this poster will assume that this is a fiction film, but that concept is misleading and makes this one of the more interesting designs this year. Imposing itself in the mind's eye as something other than what it is only plays into the film's story.

  • Trailer: B+

Thankfully, the trailer starts out telling us that this is a documentary, but its re-enactment content adds interest to the story; and that there are more than a handful of twists and turns hinted at and left to the imagination make this one of the more interesting trailers this year.

Oscar Prospects:

Those professional re-enactments are going to cost it any chance at an Oscar nomination. This would seem more likely a competitor in the bigger categories than Documentary Feature, but no other category will even consider it.
