Preview: Life of Pi (2012)

Synopsis:

Based on the popular children's book, a young man finds himself shipwrecked with a hostile tiger as they float through the ocean hoping to find land.

  • Poster: B

Review:

It's a crisp, colorful design that will taunt and tease curious filmgoers, but may give too little information to be of substantive interest.

  • Trailer: B / A-

Review:

Having never heard of nor read the book, the trailer doesn't really excite me as the way it has others. The CGI tiger looks pretty spectacular, but I'm going to need more information before I know if I'm interested or not.

We have too easily learned the danger of teasers. The first trailer appealed greatly to people who were familiar with the book, making it a tough sell to those who weren't. The film didn't look to interesting or exciting. This trailer expands greatly on the first, making the film look like a grand, beautiful adventure. That's an impressive step forward.

Oscar Prospects:

The source material is supposed to be fairly heady and Ang Lee is no stranger to awards consideration. While Visual Effects, Sound Mixing and Sound Editing nominations are likely guaranteed, the film could appear in several other categories including Art Direction, Cinematography, Editing, Original Score and, if it ends up a beloved feature, Picture, Director and Adapted Screenplay are also possibilities.
