Preview: Les Misérables (2012)

The celebrated stage musical about a wronged man and his attempts to correct his mistakes.

  • Poster: B+

This was the face of the musical from its opening on Broadway through much of its run. It's one of the most iconic images in Broadway history, so it makes perfect sense to use it for the film.

  • Trailer: A / B+

While it doesn't tell us if the whole movie's going to be very good, Anne Hathaway delivers a knock-out vocal performance in the trailer, which only makes me want to see it.

There's a larger focus on the epic composition of the musical adaptation and we get to hear snippets from all of the singers with Russell Crowe's voice being the weakest of the bunch. It also focuses on the naturalistic filming of the vocal performances, which adds a gritty realism. While it's not as compelling as the single focus of the first trailer, this may well be enough to make it a fairly sizable hit.

Oscar Prospects:

This will be one of the favorites going into Oscar season, but will need strong support from critics to muster Oscar's patience with the genre. Look for it to compete in several categories with nominations almost assured in Art Direction, Costume Design, Makeup and Sound Mixing along with another handful of techs and probably even a few above-the-line categories, like Hathaway in Supporting Actress.
