Preview: Rise of the Guardians (2012)

The Easter Bunny, Santa Claus, the Tooth Fairy and the Sandman form an elite fighting team that sets out to protect the earth's children from a creeping doom.

  • Poster: (B) / B- (All)

(I fully expect a more garish poster at some point closer to the release date, but this simple teaser design is fresh, intricately and interestingly designed, and may be one of the best placeholders in years.)

There has become something of an artistic movement surrounding the character poster. Although we've seen them for decades, the idea of individualizing each poster is frequently done quite well and for this series it works, though it feels a bit forced.

  • Trailer: B+ / B / B

The animation is excellent and the premise promises to be fun. Never underestimate the strength of DreamWorks which seems to be riding a box office high that even Pixar might become envious of soon.

While not as impressive as the first trailer, this one still engages the audience in ways that should bring them to the theater. The problem is the quality level of the story seems less impressive now than it did.

The final trailer before the film's release does seem to give a bit more of the film's more interesting visuals away, but suggest there could be more we haven't yet seen. Whether it can compare favorably to the efforts of DreamWorks' prior films remains to be seen.

Oscar Prospects:

Best Animated Feature seems like a given at this point. A win will depend on just how beloved Brave is.
