Preview: Robot & Frank (2012)

Synopsis:

In the future, technology has slowly eradicated the only life Frank ever knew. His son gives him a robot friend to try and revitalize his crumbling life, yet it isn't until the two hatch a scheme to rob wealthy donors of their valuables that the two begin to bond.

Review:

There's something oddly familiar about the poster, but I can't exactly figure it out. The color scheme, blocking and tone are almost sanitary. It doesn't do anything to set the scene of the film, which won't bring anyone to the theater.

  • Trailer: C+

Review:

I'll give the film credit for being a unique concept with intriguing opportunities. I'll even give Frank Langella and Susan Sarandon credit for giving it some gravitas. Yet, the trailer is overlong, reveals too much about the plot and ultimately promises to deliver very little.

Oscar Prospects:

Langella will have a tough time showing voters he can convincingly connect with a robot, but what little is on display in the trailer suggests he could do quite well. The Academy isn't likely to bite, but it will be a nice gesture to keep the veteran in the conversation.
