Preview: The Well-Digger's Daughter (2012)

Daniel Auteuil's latest film follows the life of the well-digger's daughter who becomes the playtoy her father's wealthy boss' son and ends up knocked up and emotionally injured after he leaves her.

A single scene from the film conjures up images in my mind of the French New Wave, though with a more provencial quality. This will work well on those who are fans of genre pieces or foreign cinema and you can get that just from the poster design.

Auteuil's been quietly distinguished for years, but hasn't had a big splash on the international market in what seems like ages. Although this seems far more traditional than a lot of work by his contemporaries, it could still be an engaging and heartfelt romantic drama.

Oscar Prospects:

I'm beginning to suspect this may be the French entry at the Oscars this year and, being a return to a style the Academy has adored in the past, could be France's first Oscar nomintaion in a few years and might even be an odds-on favorite to win at this point.
