Of the 64 countries submitting films for consideration, New Zealand is the only newcomer. At first glance, Zhang Yimou’s The Flowers of War, Aki Kaurismaki’s Le Havre, Valerie Donzelli’s Declaration of War, Wim Wender’s Pina, and Pernilla August’s Beyond have to be considered strong contenders, but without looking at the films in more detail, I couldn’t tell you for sure if they are the only ones that will be making a play for the Oscar nomination (but first the short lists to be announced later in the year).
