95th Academy Awards (2022): The Hopefuls

FINAL: JANUARY 21, 2023

It’s all come down to this. All but two guilds have announced nominations, most of the critics organizations have made their picks and now, it’s up to us to divine the tea leaves. I think this year’s crop is filled with potential for upset and my predictions are hopefully reflective of that. That said, this is a difficult year and it’s more about what the fourth or fifth slot will be filled with out of a half-dozen contenders rather than any firmness of conviction. As these are my (tentative) final predictions, I’ve added a chance notification (list just below) of the nomination coming to fruition. I’ve also tried to arrange them in the order I think the most likely to come to pass, but anything with the Borderline tag is apt to change.

Lock: It would be a major shock if these selections weren’t nominated. The buzz would be deafening.
Near Lock: These are selections that I think are pretty certain, but I cannot quite declare them as guarantees.
Good: There isn’t much of a chance that this nominee will be left off the list, but stranger things have happened.
Borderline: These are the achievements that I think are fighting for the slots not taken up by the locks, near locks and goods above. None of these selections are safe and could be bumped off by any other title with the “borderline” description.
Doubtful: These are outside contenders that have been in the conversation, but whose prospects have dimmed over time. They remain on the list because sometimes the Academy does some strange stuff.

Everything from Best Picture down through Best Documentary Feature have been placed in the order from most to least likely to be nominated.

UPDATED: DECEMBER 21, 2022

The shortlists have been announced and the lists and predictions herein have been updated as well. That is all except the three short film categories. I need more time to research those before making formal predictions.

UPDATED: DECEMBER 16, 2022

The fall festivals are over, most of the films have been seen, and the critics are giving out prizes. Things are finally solidifying. Now all we need are the guilds to weigh in and we’ll see a fairly clear picture.

UPDATED: OCTOBER 3, 2022

With the three major fall festivals now in the books, the landscape has changed a lot. Some films fell out of favor, others entered. Quite a few changes from my last update.

UPDATED: August 23, 2022

The summer didn’t bring much in the way of clarification for this year’s Oscar race, but the upcoming film festivals hold some promise. I’ve updated the list to exclude most films that may have been pushed out and some that have been scheduled. It’s still a bit too early to tell how things will go, but things should start coalescing soon.

NEW: April 24, 2022

Now that the Oscars have been over for a month, it’s time to get to work predicting next year’s Oscars. Please keep in mind that many of these films have tentative release dates and may not ultimately release. There are also likely other films that haven’t even shown up on the radar just yet, but we’ll keep an ear open to make more predictions as soon as we have more information.
