Review: (#1) A clever concept with major problems. A bland background and a Matt Damon who looks nothing like a Matt Damon. (#2) While the concept is modestly interesting, there’s too much blank space. (#3) Now that we have a background, the poster design improves, but the environment looks entirely too artificial (#4) The second poster’s concept with a giant arrow pointing down. It’s not much of an improvement, but with the cast arrayed on it and the background not being as glaringly expansive, it works slightly better.

Trailer Rating: B / B / B

Review: (#1) A teaser trailer promising a full trailer on the 12th of September. There are some very interesting images in this teaser, but the extent of the story’s shrinking element is only briefly referenced at the end when the title card is being displayed. That should create just enough intrigue to bring audiences to the new trailer.

(#2) Sometimes, a premise is so fascinating that it just encourages people to check it out at the theater. That’s what this trailer puts forth, a strange semi-futuristic world where miniaturization can be a blessing. It only briefly hints at the dark recesses hidden beneath the surface, thus making the journey more enticing.

(#3) With each new trailer, we get more details, this time finding out that there’s drama in the relationship between Matt Damon’s character and Kristen Wiig’s. That doesn’t add much to the narrative and the core concept still seems appealing even without enough supporting information.

Oscar Prospects:

The reviews have been outstanding out of the festivals, that marks this as one of the key competitors. Whether it’s unusual enough to win Best Picture is uncertain, but it’s sure to wrack up high single digits nominations.
