Review: (#1-#4) A classic teaser poster starts things off, deftly avoiding images of the film’s stars. The second posters, design either to face one another or face away from the other give us our first glimpse of the actors, though only establish that there’s futuristic fighting involved. The third trailer puts our leads together and makes it more apparent the type of film it will be, but never reaches a creative distinctiveness to be of much interest.

(#5-#8) The four newest posters are almost interchangeable. There’s little to parse out of the immense details in the design and with no newness or excitement, they seem almost derivative and entirely pointless.

Trailer: C / C+

Review: Tom Cruise playing a frightened weakling? That sounds like a tough sell. The film doesn’t look particularly interesting, but seems more Wachowski-like than their own film Jupiter Ascending does. The premise is catchy enough that it might be appealing and Emily Blunt is a welcome addition to any cast.

(#2) The very same problems I have with every Tom Cruise sci-fi effort manifest themselves here in this trailer. Outside of his work with Steven Spielberg on Minority Report, the same smug arrogance continues unabated. This second outing does infuse the story with a bit more interest, but the Groundhog Day-esque elements hamper the film’s overall fascination.

Oscar Prospects:

Standard tech categories: Sound Mixing, Sound Editing and Visual Effects. Everything else is unlikely.
