Release Date:

August 1, 2014

Synopsis:

From IMDb: “A chronicle of James Brown’s rise from extreme poverty to become one of the most influential musicians in history.”

Poster: B- / B-

Review: Two designs, both distinct, but neither spectacular. The first design has a more cinematic feel, a design that might fit with a musical inspiration. The second is less about musical inspiration and more about biographical inspiration, which is neither a detriment or an improvement.

Trailer: B+

Review: As someone not entirely familiar with James Brown’s childhood history, the film looks very interesting, exploring the soul legend’s background and family history that led him to become one of the most important figures in music history. The trailer is heavily reminiscent of another film about a music pioneer, Walk the Line, the story of Johnny Cash. Either way, this biopic looks interesting.

Oscar Prospects:

A James Brown biopic releasing late in the year. It sounds like an Oscar contender, but that August release date might hinder its chances. Still, Chadwick Bozeman was a prominent figure this year for his performance in 42 and taking on the legendary soul singer might be his ticket to an Oscar nomination. Including Oscar nominees and winners in the cast will bolster its profile, but can Tate Taylor strike twice?
