Review: (#1) A nice, quaint teaser poster that establishes setting and tone quite effectively. (#2) Going for a cutesy look that executes poorly, this poster is forgettable. (#3) This is a natural evolution of the first poster, giving us more detail about our characters, which establishes immediately that this isn’t your garden variety Disney project. (#4) Another attempt to keep the frivolity alive, this one is at least a slight bit more clever than #2.

(#5) A foreign design that takes the first and third designs and adds a level of zaniness, which belies the film’s titular search for belonging. (#6-#10) This quintet of comedy posters features just the right touch of gentle humor and simple imagery. One of the taglines doesn’t match the other four, but that doesn’t hinder their modest effectiveness.

Trailer: C

Review: This is a film that looks a little too messy to be classy and a little too jittery to be genteel. Yet, there are elements to the trailer that suggest something quite a bit deeper. The Croods, which is referenced in the trailer, had a similar issue with its trailer and that film turned out to be one of its year’s best.

Oscar Prospects:

Every animated film from a major studio should be considered a contender. I don’t see any reason not to expect this one to enter the conversation. A win is highly doubtful, though.
