Synopsis:

From IMDb: “RC Sherriff’s Journey’s End is the seminal British play about WW1. Set in a dugout in Aisne in 1918, it is the story of a group of British officers, led by the mentally disintegrating young officer Stanhope, variously awaiting their fate.”

Poster Rating: C+ / C (3)

Review: (#1) A hideous orange-tinged background and a string of soldiers walking by a poppy field has some minor symbolism, but the cheaply arrayed cast at the top ruins any visual distinctiveness. (#2-#4) The poppy symbolism of these character posters is excellent, but the execution is clunky and frustrating. The same bold and abrasive tagline is emblazoned on each and the superimposition of hazy actor heads is clumsily handled.

Trailer Rating: B- / B-

Review: (#1 & #2) The first and second trailers for this film are barely different from one another and present the same familiar war story that has a certain whiff of mortality, which is the only aspect that makes the film feel like it has solid anti-war thematic potential.

Oscar Prospects:

This type of film used to have a fair chance at Oscar consideration, but it seems to have flown under the radar and come in without the kind of support it would otherwise need.
