Synopsis:

From IMDb: “Filmed over 10 years, Magical Universe is a strange and inspiring portrait of Al Carbee, an 88 year old eccentric artist who spends all his days making Barbie art. The documentary chronicles the decade-long relationship between artist and filmmaker Jeremy Workman, who became Carbee’s closest friend and only link to the outside world. At its core, Magical Universe is about wonder, friendship, and the transcendent power of creativity, and it culminates with Al Carbee’s greatest triumph as an artist and man.”

Poster: C+

Review: It’s a diverse design, but one which won’t be interesting to anyone who’s not seen the trailer or isn’t already familiar with the left-field subject matter.

Trailer: B-

Review: The trailer establishes a bit of intrigue in exploring the life of a relatively unfamiliar artist and his unusual relationship with another couple with whom they shared many communications. A fan of documentaries about artists may find this fascinating, but other than the unusual origin of its subject, there isn’t much else to get the viewer involved.

Oscar Prospects:

None.
