Review: (#1-#5) These are an unusual take on the character poster style, taking on various aspects of the characters without showing their faces. It’s an interesting way to go about it even if it isn’t that interesting.

(#6-#10) These character posters are heavily PhotoShopped and not particularly compelling even if you get to see the stars. (#11) Worse than the previous in terms of pathetic PhotoShopping, this design at least brings the character together so we can see everyone in it within one design. (#12) The background could use some significant work as this makes the film look like a cheap theatrical production, but the variance in expression, poses, and positioning, as well as the content of the image make for a much better visual.

(#13) With more bold colors, this simple design improves upon many of its predecessors. It still isn’t that compelling, but it will appeal more effectively to the target demographic. (#14) The change of background color and minor details from previous designs doesn’t make for a better poster, except ridding itself of the white backdrop is a bonus. (#15) Here’s how you juice up a largely generic design. Giving the film a bold, though cheesy background, makes it pop in a crowded marketplace. The added details benefit the design, though the obvious PhotoShopping does diminish many of the new successes.

(#16) The color palette is fascinating and the image has a strong amount of detail, but neither is sufficiently rich enough.

Trailer Rating: B / B / B-

Review: (#1) There are a lot of humorous moments in the trailer, a lot of groan-inducing ones as well; however, with the talent involved, this could be a soft hit with audiences and a mildly amusing diversion.

(#2) The film continues to look quite funny with some problematic elements cropping up again. Although the film has its appeal, the characters seem like thinly drawn caricatures, which impedes any ability to identify or sympathize with them.

(#3) Giving Kate McKinnon more scenes in the trailer would be a wise move if her character didn’t feel overwhelmingly excessive. Much of the narrative thrust of the prior trailers is shelved for madcap cheesiness, which won’t embolden its potential.

Oscar Prospects:

None.
