Review: (#1) It’s a dark night in the dark city and overlooking it all are three illuminated sets of eyes judging it for all its transgressions. That might be a clever symbolic representation of the plot if this design in any way suggested that it was that deep a decision made. (#2-#4) These three character posters use the same color scheme, but don’t add a background and merely blank out the eyes of easily recognizable actors…if you could see their eyes. (#5) A teaser poster is a waste of time when it looks like this.

Trailer Rating: B

Review: Building on a pre-existing film gives this movie a bit of gravitas. We already know the plot is compelling and the actors are certainly giving it their all, but there’s something also tedious and generic in the design that give the impression that it’s not as good as it wants you to believe it is.

Oscar Prospects:

The original film was an Oscar winner for Best Foreign Language Film. This American update features three Oscar-nominated actors, two of which have won before and the third should have. That kind of powerhouse and a prime pre-Thanksgiving release suggests the film could be an Oscar player for major categories or is simply targeted at holiday audiences. Either way, we’ll know more after it screens for critics and word slips out.
