Review: There’s a lack of symmetry to the design that both works and doesn’t. The female characters are set right-side up with more “feminine” colors while the men are set in “masculine” colors, but are placed on their sides, each oriented in different directions. It’s disconcerting, which may be the entire point. The record in the center doesn’t add much to the whole.

Review: It’s always interesting to see what Terrence Malick has cooked up and this trailer suggests a film not unlike his prior few, which isn’t necessarily a good sign. Still, these are strong actors and it’s possible the whole could end up better than the sum of its parts.

Oscar Prospects:

There was a time when Terrence Malick was a feature of the Oscars, even at his most minor, but the last few films have been utterly ignored. Will this be a return to grace? We’ll see. Even if it’s not that well received, a Best Cinematography nomination is always a possibility since that’s the category he’s most frequently gotten appreciation in.
