Review: (#1) It reminds the audience of the first film only in reflection, but is otherwise unappealing and insignificant.

(#2-#8) These character posters look like they are part of a single unified design that spans all of them. It’s a bold choice that unfortunately few film publicity departments are using. (#9) This modestly Star Wars-inspired design has a lot of wasted space and a liquidic style that lacks genuine flow.

(#10) Breaking up the dullness of the blank white background is a good move and the content isn’t bad, nor are the colors. It’s certainly the most interesting IMAX design seen in awhile. (#11) Replacing the white with a black starry expanse is a good decision and the blue-and-purple color scheme works modeslty well. (#12-#13) This pair of character posters is a continuance of the set labeled 2 to 8, so there’s nothing more to say..

Trailer Rating: C+ / B+

Review: (#1) In a dystopian future, we’re given a new plot that’s not particularly interesting. It tries to tie itself into the prior film, but feels quite distant. Then, the funniest joke in the entire film regarding men getting all the credit for the strong women doing all the work is completely gutted by the subsequent scenes painting this as little more than a rescue of the damsel in distress, which it was just chastising.

(#2) Unlike the first film, this trailer does more to introduce characters and make them interesting than the prior. It also serves to give the film a little more urgency and humor by contrast.

Oscar Prospects:

The first movie failed to earn an Oscar nominated for Best Animated Feature in something of a shock. It did pick up an Original Song nomination, so this film could follow in its footsteps. However, it’s possible the second film will also fail to earn a nomination especially since sequels already struggle when it comes to Animated Feature Oscar nominations. It still has a chance with a new original song, but there’s no sign of such a thing at this point.
