Horror films typically drop faster at the box office than most films, which should give Dwayne Johnson’s monster movie Rampage a free shot at the box office. Of course, A Quiet Place may not play like other horror films and could slip much less steeply with solid word of mouth. That might make the competition a bit more fierce, making it tougher for Rampage to hit the top, thought it probably still will. The rest of the weekend’s new releases aren’t likely to outperform meager expectations.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): If this were solely Bjorn Borg’s story, I could see a compelling film emerging, but the John McEnroe element seems a bit sensationalistic to be good.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Well-reviewed but problematic sports film. Tennis fans will know the outcome, no one else will care.
Tripp Burton (TB): This doesn’t look like anything above a generic sports film.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): As a tennis fan, I am looking forward to this film. It sounds like they made the final tournament exciting to watch, which was sadly missing in Battle of the Sexes.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): With only a couple of modestly funny one-liners in the trailer, the only things really keeping me interested in this film are Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Joe Manganiello.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): I guess Kong wasn’t available, so they got George to play the genetically altered gorilla. Looks silly.
Tripp Burton (TB): This looks like a pretty dumb movie, but it could be a lot of dumb fun.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): I am not sure that the special effects look that interesting to want to see this film. San Andreas was not that great and this looks like a step down for the director and star.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): Awful animation have pretty much put this film at the bottom of the list of films I’m looking forward to.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): It seems to me that the great hero dog of WWI deserves better than a minimalist cartoon movie.
Tripp Burton (TB): This looks pretty dumb, and not in a good way.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): This looks sickeningly sweet and not well animated.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): The concept is interesting, but the film looks dreadful.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Another week, another low-budget, low-quality horror movie.
Tripp Burton (TB): There is nothing original looking in this film.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): Horror films are not my favorite and this one looks pretty lame to boot.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): This looks a bit like torture porn or revenge porn and that doesn’t make me interested.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): I’ve seen the trailer so many times, I’m now imagining I’ve seen the movie.
Tripp Burton (TB): There is nothing original looking in this film.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): So who is the prey, the trapper of the trapped? Unfortunately the violent trailer makes me not care about either.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): I’m just not a fan of World War II films, especially ones that don’t look that appealing.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Post-Holocaust comedy could be interesting.
Tripp Burton (TB): This looks like it could be a lot of fun.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): The score makes this sound like a light hearted comedy in post-war Germany, but the trailer neither seemed that funny or interesting.

Peter J. Patrick (PP): Low-budget Korean horror film doesn’t look any better than its U.S. counterparts.
Tripp Burton (TB): This looks dreadful.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): The trailer is neither scary nor atmospheric, relying on fast cuts to add any tension.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): I like the concept and the trailer’s not too bad, but I’m not entirely sold on it yet.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): And now we have a low-budget horror film from India.
Tripp Burton (TB): I have no idea what to make of this film, but it doesn’t seem good.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): This makes the trailer to A Quiet Place look like a masterpiece, especially as it gives no reason for the silence. The one creature it showed looked more laughable than frightening.

Peter J. Patrick (PP): Film Independent Spirit Award winner seems to have its charms.
Tripp Burton (TB): I’ve seen this, and it is not my thing at all, but it has numerous awards and raves, so I might have missed something.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): The trailer does not inspire, but the critics seem to love this film, so it might be nice slice of Americana.

Peter J. Patrick (PP): Well-reviewed festival hit looks a bit tedious to me.
Tripp Burton (TB): This looks like it could be excellent, and I’ll probably check it out when it is streaming.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): The critics seem to love the film, but the trailer did not do a good job at selling it.
