Apart from the third film, which opened below the second, each new The Fast & the Furious franchise entry has outperformed the previous in terms of opening weekend. The first film beats the second and third in terms of overall box office, but it largely holds true there as well. The seventh film earned $147 million. This entry will either improve on that, which seems like a stretch, or will do worse, but still top the sixth film’s $97 million. That said, it’s clear the film will earn the top spot at the box office as there is no other competition.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): I haven’t been interested in a single one of these films. Eight films into the series doesn’t give me much interest in catching up either.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): For fans of the series, of which I’m not one.
Tripp Burton (TB): I’ve never caught up with any of the Fast and the Furious franchise, so why start now?
Thomas LaTourette (TL): It looks like another high adrenaline rush from the same troupe. Fans will eat it up.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): There’s something fascinating and mysterious suggested in the trailer, though there are a lot of things that give me misgivings.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Historical drama set in the Amazon in the 1920s offers something different.
Tripp Burton (TB): James Gray is always an interesting filmmaker, so I’m curious to see what he does with this material.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): The early reviews rate this highly and it looks like a good old fashioned epic.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): I like Richard Gere’s late-career work, but this doesn’t look like something I’d be too intrigued by.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): The trailer for this U.S.-Israel co-production is a bit on the dull side, but is the film? Hard to tell.
Tripp Burton (TB): This looks like a nice little movie that I am in no hurry to catch up with.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): Some of the reviews are good especially citing Richard Gere’s performance, but an unexciting trailer did not interest me at all in seeing this film.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): Apart from Cynthia Nixon’s performance, I can’t say there’s much about this generic period film that fascinates me.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Genteel biography of poet Emily Dickinson should find an appreciativee, if limited, audience.
Tripp Burton (TB): Cynthia Nixon is supposed to be wonderful, which is a reason enough to check this biopic out.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): The story of Emily Dickinson will hopefully prove more exciting than the trailer. Some reviews are good, though it seems a little stately and slow moving.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): An awful looking animated film in a long line of awful looking, small budget animated films.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Inventive animated feature with strong voice cast could be a holiday week hit.
Tripp Burton (TB): This looks dreadful.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): The animation looks weak and the writing leaves a lot to be desired. I think only little kids will like this one.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): This relgious-themed drama doesn’t have a very intriguing trailer.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Contemporary Russian film, a festival favorite, could be interesting.
Tripp Burton (TB): I don’t know what to make of this film, but it looks interesting to be sure.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): The early reviews are good, but I found the trailer perplexing. Will wait until more reviews are out to pass judgment.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): A period golf film. The Legend of Bagger Vance was the last one I saw and I can’t say that I have much interest in them.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Historical U.S.-U.K. golf drama looks strong enough to bring in a wider audience than just lovers of the game.
Tripp Burton (TB): This holds no interest for me.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): It looks like a decent film about class struggles and golf, and hopefully it will not get too full of its own good intentions.
