After a Quiet weekend at the box office, with the horror thriller coming out on top for the second time in its three weeks in release, a new champion will be crowned and that’s Avengers: Infinity War. Nine films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) have topped $100 million at the box office on their opening weekends. The original Avengers remains to the top weekend with Black Panther shy of that title by about $5 million. Those are the only two films to top $200 million at the box office. With Avengers: Age of Ultron and Captain America: Civil War being the next two top finishers, both of which are essentially Avengers films and not stand-alones. That means this third formally-titled Avengers film, fourth nearly-full team-up film, is sure to be one of the year’s top openers.

Can it top Black Panther and if it does, will it then top The Avengers from 2012? The answer is: probably. There are five total films that have ever topped $200 million on opening weekend. Apart from the two MCU titles, which sit at fourth and fifth on the list, there’s Jurassic World, Star Wars: The Force Awakens, and Star Wars: The Last Jedi. The Force Awakens is the current record-holder. Jurassic World barely topped Avengers with $208. The Last Jedi is just above with $220. That puts Force Awakens on top with $247. My guess is that Inifity War will finish out at third on the list behind the two Star Wars films.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): I’ve seen them all, so I have no reason not to see it, though it’s not had a lot of great entries in some time. Though, this is supposed to be the culmination of ten years’ worth of films, so it should hopefully be amusing.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Looks like too much CGI for my taste, but bound to be a box-office phenomenon all the same.
Tripp Burton (TB): I’m not a real MCU fan, and this looks completely bloated, but it looks like that could be what makes it so much fun.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): I will see it as I have seen all the other Marvel films, but the trailer makes it look like the film takes itself way too seriously. Hopefully the additions of Loki and the Guardians of the Galaxy will add some needed levity.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): An interesting premise, but an uninteresing trailer.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Well-reviewed film of forbidden love in a cloistered community. Looks good.
Tripp Burton (TB): Sebastian Leilo’s A Fantastic Woman is one of my favorite films of last year, and I can’t wait to see this follow-up.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): The trailer seems a little glum, but it might be an interesting look at how homosexuality affects life in a secluded Jewish community.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): I love Halle Berry, so that’s the main reason I have any real interest in the film.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Poorly reviewed drama about the L.A. riots of the early 90s – it has a 0% rating on Rotten Tomatoes thus far.
Tripp Burton (TB): This looks like a not-good version of a story that deserves a much better film.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): The trailer is not bad and makes it look like a decent view of the Rodney King riots from one family’s perspective, but the first reviews are uniformly negative, which gives me pause.
