Two unstoppable forces meet on the battlefield of the weekend and we’ll soon find out which has a more important underlying demographic. On the one side, you have horror fans and Stephen King fans who turned It into a $327 million juggernaut with a $123 million opening weekend. On the other side you have DC comics fans who have made $100 million-plus openings de rigeur. What works against Shazam! is that the film only appears to be tangentially related to the Extended Universe and doesn’t connect to the Justice League in any certain way. Further, only two of the six films have topped the performance of It on opening weekend. Half of them have topped its overall run, though. Ultimately, Pet Sematary has a slight, built-in advantage in terms of opening weekends, though Shazam! being quite a bit more peppy and upbeat than its darker DCEU cousins could give it a chance, especially since Sematary wouldn’t be considered one of King’s more guaranteed potential hits. It will be an interesting comparison at the end of the weekend.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): Part of this looks fun because of Taraji P. Henson. Part of this looks execrable.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Recreation of civil rights activist Ann Atwater’s 1971 fight for school integration in Durham, NC looks informative but less compelling than it probably ought to.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): With this cast and true story line, this should feel like an Oscar possibility, but it just felt too smug and sure of itself to generate that much interest.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): Couldn’t muster up interest in watching the remake of “It” (the original was great). This remake is also disinteresting compared to the original..
Peter J. Patrick (PP): I never saw the first version of Stephen King’s novel, and probably will never see this one either, but for those so inclined, looks to be about what one would expect.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): Some early reviews like it, but the bland trailer does not scare up any interest.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): It looks like it could be mildly amusing or it could be an utter waste of celluloid.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Latest take on the fourteen-year-old streetwise kid turned superhero looks a bit silly for my tastes, but should bring in the crowds.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): The movie may end up being too adolescent for me, but the trailer certainly makes it look like a lot of fun.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): This sci-fi drama doesn’t look as fascinating as it should.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Intriguing looking sci-fi drama from the legendary Claire Denis looks to be something worth seeking out.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): The trailer leaves me cold, but the critics like it enormously, so it may be worth seeing.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): Normally Mike Leigh is someone to get excited over, but early word isn’t great.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Slow historical drama released last year in the U.K. failed to garner much expected awards recognition.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): Even though his movie is coming out in April, one should never count Mike Leigh out of the Oscar picture. The trailer is visually beautiful, but does little to appeal to the heart.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): This looks like a sad attempt by Emilio Estevez to establish relevancy he never really had.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Study of homelessness was in development for more than six years, hopefully the wait will have been worth it.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): The trailer feels a little too facile for such a big issue, but it might prove worthwhile and not too cloying.
