The Boss Baby is proof you can never count out animated films to produce strong box office results. Having one come out so close to another might prove fatal, but the other two new releases don’t sound like they’ll be much competition for Smurfs: The Lost Village or holdovers Boss Baby and Beauty and the Beast, a film that might jut rebound to #1.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): I have no desire to see a film that completely misrepresents atheism.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): I have no idea what to make of this autobiographical atheist finds God film. I’m rating it a non-committal 5.
Tripp Burton (TB): Not my type of movie, but if it is this could be worth your time.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): Easter is coming and so are the faith based movies. This one looks earnestly bad.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): The actors are great, but the premise is awful.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): This was a hit nearly 40 years ago for George Burns and company. Can lightning strikes again? We’ll see.
Tripp Burton (TB): This cast is fantastic, but unfortunately the film around them doesn’t look too hot.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): The original was not that good, and this looks a step down jokewise, though the three pros probably will have some decent chemistry.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): It’s nice that they are getting back to animation, but it still doesnโ€™t quite feel like The Smurfs.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Not my cup of tea.
Tripp Burton (TB): Even my six-year-old seemed underwhelmed by the trailer.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): Trolls was a surprisingly fun movie. This looks much more formulaic, and I have never understood the appeal of the Smurfs.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): It looks both equally interesting and frustrating.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Cezanne and Zola are worth exploring, but not necessarily in this context.
Tripp Burton (TB): This looks like a paint-by-numbers biopic, no pun intended.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): What should be an exciting film about two artists looks more mundane than exhilarating.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): The concept is just outlandish enough to be interesting.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Sci-fi comedy doesn’t look very appealing.
Tripp Burton (TB): I will watch Anne Hathaway in most anything, which may be why I am looking forward to this more than most other people.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): I am not certain where the movie will go, but the trailer about a loser played by Anne Hathaway who is somehow connected to a giant creature in South Korea was surprisingly fun.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): As much as I like Chris Evans, this does look a tad hokey, but possibly worth watching.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): I’m a sucker for smart kid movies, so here’s hoping this is a good one.
Tripp Burton (TB): This feels very generic.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): A gifted child caught between a caring but underachieving father and a cold calculating grandmother looks like it ticks off all the check marks of an ordinary family drama.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): Armie Hammer trapped in the desert. I loved Buried, which had a slightly similar concept, so I’ll probably give this a shot at some point.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): The trailer was decent enough, but the critics seem to hate this war movie.
Tripp Burton (TB): This feels very generic.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): Armie Hammer is a decent actor, but I am not sure if he can hold together an entire movie that looks headed into banality.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): This has a solid cast, but may just be a little too much fluff.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Critics seem to like this World War 2 era comedy, but it looks a bit too smug to be really good.
Tripp Burton (TB): Lone Scherfig can be a very interesting director, but this doesn’t look like one of her best.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): It may end up being too cute, but this WWII set film boasts star power from Bill Nighy, Gemma Arterton, and Sam Claflin and a storyline about women trying to succeed in a men’s world that may still resonate today.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): Supposedly Dan Stevens gives a stellar performance; however, the trailer doesn’t make the film look very good.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Morality tale about modern consumerism may or may not be good, the lackluster trailer doesn’t help.
Tripp Burton (TB): Just the plot description alone sounds pretentious.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): An intriguing premise of a man suddenly regaining his sight and how that changes him looks good to start with, but it seems awfully melodramatic by the end of the trailer.

Wesley Lovell (WL): Nostalgia for ’80s horror can only take you so far and it might lead me to this movie.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Another week, another horror film I’m not planning to see.
Tripp Burton (TB): This horror film got a little bit of buzz from the festival circuit and I’m curious to catch it when it is on streaming.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): The trailer for this horror film does not excite me one bit.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): I don’t care much for anime outside of Hayao Miyazaki, but this doesn’t look too bad.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Japan’s no. 1 box-office of 2016, anime dubbed into English, should find an appreciative audience.
Tripp Burton (TB): I’ve heard good things about this.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): If it was not released until this year, the buzz it was generating could get it an Oscar nom as two separate lives intersect over a comet. (Editor’s Note: The film was shortlisted for Oscar in 2016)
