Although it would be quite a treat for Spike Lee to storm the box office with BlacKkKlansman, the likelihood of the Conjuring prequel The Nun topping it is fairly high. Slender Man may struggle against more familiar horror competition while The Meg has disaster film written all over it and I’m not referring to its premise.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): This is one of my most anticipated films of the year.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): The year’s first genuine Oscar contender could be Spike Lee’s most successful film ever.
Tripp Burton (TB): This might be my most anticipated movie of the year, and looks like top-form Spike Lee.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): The reviews are great and the trailer blends humor and disturbing imagery well. This looks fascinating and should be Spike Lee’s best film in years.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): I think I would rather watch the terrible-looking Sharknado than this.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): The “Alien” of shark movies or a dud? Hard to tell from the trailer.
Tripp Burton (TB): This looks like late-night on cable fun.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): It boasts better effects than the original Jaws, but I doubt it will be nearly as good as that film was at producing scares.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): I haven’t been terribly interested in this series, though this does seem a bit appealing.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Good cast but do we need another “Conjuring”?
Tripp Burton (TB): This sort of horror film does nothing for me.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): I have not seen The Conjuring, and this trailer really does not entice me to see this or the earlier films. It looks a little creepy for those who like that type of film.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): This whole fad is tired now, but the trailer doesn’t look half bad.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Looks like another icky horror movie.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): I did not find the trailer terribly scary nor that interesting. It looks like the lesser of the two horror films opening this week.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): There’s little in the trailer that appeals to me.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Nothing here to get excited about.
Tripp Burton (TB): It is nice to see a Philipino film getting released over here, but this doesn’t do much for me.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): The description on rottentomatoes makes it sound like it could be interesting, but the trailer does not sell the film and is a confusing set of violent acts.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): The trailer doesn’t make much sense and that doesn’t bolster my interest in it.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): A Chinese “Cast Away” or a waste of time? Can’t tell from the trailer.
Tripp Burton (TB): I’m not quite sure what to make of this.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): This seems like it could be interesting, at least by its description, but the trailer makes it look like more of a lame comedy than anything else.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): I think I might just watch this based on the strange and awesome trailer alone.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Looks pretty asinine.
Tripp Burton (TB): This looks interesting, and it is nice to see Molly Parker getting a meaty role again.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): The trailer is interesting and confounding and shows nothing about the movie, but the reviews are good and it could be worth seeing.
