Early reviews are surprisingly good, meaning Disney might have another hit on its hands. Fans of the original may take their children to see this new version, which could bolster attendance. The rest of the new releases look like they’ll struggle to keep up, though Sausage Party has the most potential to surprise everyone.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): I like Meryl in most things, but this doesn’t look like nearly as much fun as it should.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Already released everywhere except in the U.S., box office prospects don’t look promising, but Meryl Streep seems primed for her 20th Oscar nod anyway.
Tripp Burton (TB): This looks amusing enough, but I’m not rushing to see it.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): I am still unsure of this movie, though the critics have been quite kind. Streep will undoubtedly have a field day playing a woman who can’t sing.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): I grew up on the original, so this remake doesn’t hold the same appeal to me.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): I didn’t care for the original, but this one looks like an improvement sans the Sherman Brothers’ least distinguished score.
Tripp Burton (TB): I loved the original as a child, but I’m not exactly sure how well that has been rebooted.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): I never saw the original film, so there is no nostalgia for me on this. But the trailer and critics are encouraging, so it might be worth seeing.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): The concept appeals to me and a raunchy animated film would certainly be a nice change of pace.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Hot dogs and buns on their way to their demise. Somehow I don’t think this is a cartoon movie for kids.
Tripp Burton (TB): This looks insufferable.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): The ratings are superb at Rotten Tomatoes, but I am just not certain it will be that funny. Though, South Park the movie was hysterical, so there is hope.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): The film’s entire premise is compelling, but the August release worries me.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Looks to be the better of the two anti-Nazi movies being released this week.
Tripp Burton (TB): Yet another WWII film, and another one I’m not sure we exactly need.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): The trailer looks gripping, but the early reviews make this WWII-set film sound like it misses the mark. Pity.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): Why is this not releasing direct-to-video? That’s how bad it looks.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Looks like the less interesting of the two anti-Nazi movies being released this week.
Tripp Burton (TB): Yet another WWII film, and another one I’m not sure we exactly needed.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): This definitely looks like the middle of the three WWII-themed films that are coming out this week. Anthropoid looks the better one if you need to see one.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): It looks entirely formulaic, but that might not be a bad thing.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Looks like the second coming of The Night of the Hunter, which could be a good thing.
Tripp Burton (TB): Survival films aren’t my favorite genre, so I’ll wait to see this if people really love it.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): This just looks like bad family drama mixed with dangerous strangers all trapped in the same cabin. I will pass.

Wesley Lovell (WL): I love spoofs, but even this looks like an unfunny chore.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Paranormal nonsense looks like an utter waste of time.
Tripp Burton (TB): This looks brutally unfunny.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): This film looks like it tries too hard to be humorous when a gang of fools try to be ghost hunters. It looks neither funny nor scary.

Wesley Lovell (WL): I like one of the actors in the film, but not enough to give it any of my time.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Strong cast in modern western from the writer of Sicario and the director of Starred Up looks like a winner.
Tripp Burton (TB): I’ve been waiting since Cannes to see this, and can’t wait to check it out.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): The early reviews are great, but the trailer really doesn’t excite me about brothers robbing banks to help their mother.

Peter J. Patrick (PP): Stylish but uninvolving melodrama about a fashion model doesn’t look like anything I’d be in a rush to see.
Tripp Burton (TB): I’ve heard little about this, but it seems intriguing enough.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): A model being pursued by a photographer, this film has pretty people and settings but it looks familiar.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): What’s the Japanese equivalent of direct-to-video?
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Looks like another paycheck movie for Liam Neeson.
Tripp Burton (TB): Yet another WWII film, and another one I’m not sure we exactly needed.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): This definitely looks like the weakest of the three WWII-set films opening, with overwrought acting and tons of explosions. It’s probably not worth it.
