This will be an interesting weekend. Two very targeted pics enter the marketplace. The Man from U.N.C.L.E. will appeal to the type of moviegoer that made Sherlock Holmes a huge success. The main distinction is that it doesn’t have a huge star like Robert Downey Jr. involved. The other is Straight Outta Compton, which will appeal largely to the black community. Both films have interesting prospects and given the right conditions could easily top the box office. It will be a very interesting weekend.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): I wanted to be compelled. I love Armie Hammer, but the trailers look relatively ridiculous. I might still see it, but I’m not nearly as interested as I thought I would be.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Light comedy version of the old TV show could be fun but it’s not an awards-type film.
Tripp Burton (TB): This might be the must unnecessary, and frankly undemanded, reboot of the year. Is there anyone out there clamoring for this? Does anyone under 25 even know what this is?
Thomas LaTourette (TL): This just feels like a misfire. I like the actors, but it looks like a typical shoot โ€˜em up comedy bromance, and I donโ€™t have much of a desire to see it.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): I was surprised after seeing the trailer just how compelling this narrative looked. I’m always fascinated in by how history falls into the trend of “the more things change, the more things stay the same.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Not being a rap music fan I have no desire to see this film.
Tripp Burton (TB): Looks like it could be interesting, even if this isn’t usually my thing.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): Not being a fan of rap, this picture does not hold much appeal to me, though the reviews make it sound worth watching.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): Noah Baumbach is one of those directors that I’ve been only minimally impressed with, but Greta Gerwig looks like an absolute hoot.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Sundance hit could be a late summer hit.
Tripp Burton (TB): Frances Ha was one of my favorite films a few years ago, so I’m looking forward to seeing what this turns out to be.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): Somehow this one just doesnโ€™t excite me that much, but maybe the story of female friendship will prove better than the description.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): It seems like it could be a rather amusing picture. Whether it’s actually good or not is uncertain.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Minor French film will likely get lost in the shuffle both at the box office and at awards time.
Tripp Burton (TB): This came out in France 3 years ago…does that make anyone else a little weary of it?
Thomas LaTourette (TL): A fun if slight premise of an older French woman supplementing her income by selling pot. Could be fun, but sounds a bit contrived.
