Two new movies will target the same audience demographic, namely those that enjoy action thrillers. While one is a heist film (Logan Lucky), the other is an action comedy (The Hitman’s Bodyguard). The latter has been heavily advertised in theaters and other venues. The former has not. On top of that, well known faces Ryan Reynolds and Samuel L. Jackson star in Hitman, which should give it plenty of attention going into the weekend for an easy first-place finish.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): It looks like good campy fun even if isn’t a good movie.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Inept looking comedy abut a hitman and his bodyguard doesn’t interest me.
Tripp Burton (TB): This looks like a welcome throwback to the action-comedy 1980s comedies and might be worth sitting in an ice air-conditioned theatre.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): It could be a cute sendup of action films, but it probably doesn’t rise to the point of parody.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): The trailer is somewhat off-putting and the premise doesn’t seem that fresh.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): The hillbilly version of Oceans 11 doesn’t do anything for me.
Tripp Burton (TB): Steven Soderbergh heist films is one of my favorite genres so this is a must-see for me.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): It sounds and looks like a return to type for Stephen Soderbergh doing a fun heist film. It looks more entertaining than The Hitman’s Bodyguard.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): The premsie is important, but the film doesn’t look great.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Films about a miscarriage of justice is the stuff of TV documentaries, but this one looks like it might click as a feature.
Tripp Burton (TB): This looks fairly pedestrian and the early word of mouth seems to support that.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): It boasts an earnest trailer, but the early reviews find that it doesn’t get too deep into the characters.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): It looks like a rote recitation of history painted as an action film.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): British hostage drama looks intense, but will probably play better on home video than in theatres.
Tripp Burton (TB): This looks like an uninteresting take on a fascinating story.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): I don’t know anything about the Iranian embassy in London being taken over in 1980, but it could be a tense thriller.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): I like Mission: Impossible, but I’m not interested in seeing a foreign knock-off.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Routine Hong Kong actioner is likely not to attract much attention beyond the usual audience for such films.
Tripp Burton (TB): Jean Reno seems to have been relegated to a certain subgenre of films I have no interest in anymore.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): Another heist film this week, and the trailer certainly did not grab me.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): I want to be interested, but the trailers aren’t doing the premsie justice.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Festival hit about race relations in a time of crisis looks impressive, could be a sleeper hit.
Tripp Burton (TB): I saw this at a festival last month and it is fantastic. This is a must-see film.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): Although it sounds similar to Spike Lee’s Do the Right Thing, it looks to take a new perspective on the Rodney King riots and interracial hostilities of LA in 1992.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): I’m fascinated by the potential, though the execution I’m not certain about.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Breakthrough role for Australian Danielle Macdonald as a “dirty Jersey” girl rapper might have a difficult time finding an audience.
Tripp Burton (TB): I’ve heard some good stuff about this film from the festival circuit, but I’ll wait until it’s streaming to check it out.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): This could be an entertaining film about an unlikely rap star, but it just does not look like my cup of tea.
