The second weekend of Straight Outta Compton will be tough competition for a stoner comedy, but those types of films have done surprisingly well in recent years. This outing puts recognizable faces before the audience, giving them to see people acting totally different from what they’re used to. It’s a great sales tool unless you don’t care much for most of the actors, which will be its biggest stumbling block.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): Other than Topher Grace, I’m not particularly enamored with anyone in the film, which severely limits my interest.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Is there anyone actually looking forward to seeing this manic nonsense?
Tripp Burton (TB): Nothing about this film appeals to me, but it should appeal to lots of other people, and that is fine.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): This sounds like another movie with a decent cast that is wasted on a so-so premise. It just does not sound very good.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): It looks like another action-heavy waste of time.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Looks like another unnecessary violent flick, albeit one with a little flair.
Tripp Burton (TB): I’m very happy to see Rupert Friend getting a major role like this, but it’s too bad the movie around him looks so generic.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): It has a strong cast, but looks to be the regular shoot โ€˜em up spy film. It is hard to get excited by it from the trailer.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): I don’t even remember what the first film was about, it looked so generic. While this has some interesting elements, the trailer paints a very negative portrait of how well put together the film is.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Intriguing looking little horror movie. Could be good, could be a waste of time, but looks better than the week’s other two wide releases.
Tripp Burton (TB): I don’t even remember Sinister 1 coming out, so I don’t think I’ll check out Sinster 2!
Thomas LaTourette (TL): Horror films do little for me, and I have no desire to see this one.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): It looks so unoriginal that I’m not even sure which of the same type of film I’ve watched, if any.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Looks like a Lifetime movie of the week to me.
Tripp Burton (TB): Looks like it could be a nice little movie, but it comes out on Netflix streaming in a few weeks, so I’ll wait for that.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): Young love put to the test. It sounds heartfelt and dull.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): When even Marcia Gay Harden looks terrible, you know you have problems.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Off-beat romantic comedy-drama set in Costa Rica could be a real charmer.
Tripp Burton (TB): Again, nothing too appealing here for me, but fans of this type of film may eat this up.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): Marcia Gay Harden is always worth watching and she might elevate the standard woman discovering herself who meets younger man story that this appears to be.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): I would want to watch this for the cast since none of the rest of it looks even remotely fun.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Pointless looking comedy-mystery-drama.
Tripp Burton (TB): With this cast lined up, I’m really curious to see what comes out, but I’ll probably wait until it is streaming for free somewhere.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): This might be an interesting movie, but sounds a bit more likely to be a drag.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): Lily Tomlin looks exceptionally funny, which might give the film some teeth, but I’m a bit leery anyway.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Lily Tomlin’s first starring role in 40 years looks like it was worth the wait.
Tripp Burton (TB): I’m hearing there will be a push for Lily Tomlin in this come awards season, and I’d love to see her back in top form.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): Lily Tomlin may finally have a picture role deserving of her ability. I donโ€™t know that she will be able to attain Oscar glory with this, but it does sound like she will be in the mix at age 76. It definitely sounds like a movie to see.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): Welcome to the pre-Labor Day dumping group where films that no one would have considered watching at any other time of the year find themselves crammed into the closing weeks of Summer.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Off-beat comedy with Ben Kingsley and Patricia Clarkson looks promising.
Tripp Burton (TB): Not my type of thing, but fans of these middle-aged romances could do worse than Patrica Clarkson and Ben Kingsley.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): Another film this week that has a strong cast but sounds like it fails in production. It could be worth seeing because of the cast, but will be a bit of a letdown.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): I can’t help but feel that this will be a clunker even if it has some excellent actors in it.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Five-year-old film, released theatrically to the rest of the world in 2010 and DVD in 2011 is likely to have a quick death at the U.S. box office and go quickly to DVD.
Tripp Burton (TB): According to IMDb, this premiered five years ago in China and is just now making its way here…that makes me quite skeptical!
Thomas LaTourette (TL): Five years after its release in China, this is finally getting a statewide release, and that is not a good sign. It looks to be an interesting idea, with good sets and costumes and a probably miscast leading man. Probably not worth seeing in the theaters.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): It may be satisfactory, but it will definitely be a throw-away kind of okay.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Peter Bogdanovich hasn’t directed anything good since Mask thirty years ago. This doesn’t look like it’s going to change his track record.
Tripp Burton (TB): Peter Bogdanovich is one of my all-time favorite directors, and even if his recent output hasn’t been as great, I’m still excited to see what he does with this cast!
Thomas LaTourette (TL): This seems to be the week of strong casts in weak pictures. Peter Bogdanovich has not had a hit in decades, and that looks likely to continue, though this has a fun if convoluted premise.
