This summer has been surprisingly bereft of comedies, but The Spy Who Dumped Me hopes to change that with an August opening that could end up being the traditional summer sleeper. It must contend against the non-Marvel/DC superhero drama Darkest Minds and the family-friendly Christopher Robin. It will be an interesting battle with Mila Kunis and Kate McKinnon having the best shot of coming out on top.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): While it looks like a charming family film, it isn’t likely to be something I see in the theater.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): I’d rather re-watch the more realistic Goodbye Christopher Robin than indulge in this nonsense.
Tripp Burton (TB): I’m looking forward to this, although it could easily be a complete failure.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): I’ve always liked Ewan McGregor and Winnie the Pooh, but I am still a little hesitant about this new film with Christopher Robin as an adult. Still it could be charming.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): This teen superhero film looks intensely compelling.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): I don’t usually like dystopian dramas set in the near future but this one looks good.
Tripp Burton (TB): This looks like a run-of-the-mill YA dystopian film.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): It could be pretty good, but teenage dystopian films seem too common anymore.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): Kunis and McKennon should make an affable pair in this hopes-to-be-Spy movie.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): There’s nothing sadder than an unfunny comedy and that’s what this looks to be.
Tripp Burton (TB): These aren’t my favorite comediennes, but I know lots of people will find it hilarious.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): Kate McKinnon is a marvel, but the movies have yet to figure out how to use her well. This does not look like it will help.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): Outside of Chloe Grace Moretz, I’m not impressed by the trailers.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): The first of two major gay conversion therapy films this year, it won the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance.
Tripp Burton (TB): This looks like a really powerful little film, and I’m very intrigued.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): This has a story that should be enthralling, but a tepid trailer puts little excitement into it.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): This half-baked stoner comedy could be fun, but not fun enough to see in the theater.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Never going to see it, and what’s more, I’m likely to forget it ever existed.
Tripp Burton (TB): This looks fun.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): There may be more to this gal pal movie than came across in the trailer, but the two women just did not come across as people I want to spend time with.
