The long anticipated adaptation of the popular Stephen King sci-fi western should open to strong numbers against the third weekend of Dunkirk and second of The Emoji Movie. It should easily top the week’s other new wide release Kidnap and will likely outperform the wide expansion of Detroit, though that competition might be more fierce.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): I’m interested because of Idris Elba. I’m disinterested because of Matthew McConaughey.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Looks like another disappointing Stephen King adaptation to me.
Tripp Burton (TB): I haven’t read the Stephen King series (yet) but this looks like an interesting enough adaptation.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): Halle Berry is the only reason I have any interest in this film and that’s an incredibly limited interest.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Nice to see Halle Berry in a starring role for a change, but not sure the material is all that good.
Tripp Burton (TB): I have little interest in Halle Berry’s films of late, so I won’t be checking this one out.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): I was not impressed with Kathryn Bigelow’s Oscar winner and never saw her follow up. This looks at least modestly interesting, but not something Iโ€™m clamoring to see.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Kathryn Bigelow’s reenactment of the Detroit riots of 50 years ago should be riveting.
Tripp Burton (TB): This is one of my most anticipated films of the year and I will be there opening weekend (I hope).

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): It might have some value, but the trailer doesn’t convey it very well.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Might be good, but I’m not sure I want to see a film celebrating the town Mike Pence grew up in.
Tripp Burton (TB): This got some rave reviews in Sundance and I’m really curious to check it out.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): As much as I love horror, I can recognize when something just doesn’t look up to snuff.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Another low-budget horror film I have no interest in.
Tripp Burton (TB): This looks dismal.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): Chadwick Boseman looks fine, but the film itself looks cheap and predictable.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Unappealing looking thriller being streamed on Netflix.
Tripp Burton (TB): This is an amazing ensemble but it doesn’t look like the film quite lives up to their promise.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): I want to believe that the film’s look at the underappreciated in High School is going to be good, but the title already angers me and the trailer isn’t that good.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Sweet looking romance between a one-eyed boy and a fat girl.
Tripp Burton (TB): This looks very interesting.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): I’ve seen Witness and this just looks like a white-savior kind of film focusing on Native American relations, which doesn’t appeal to me.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Taylor Sheridan’s mystery set on a Native American reservation looks like a good one.
Tripp Burton (TB): After his last few films, I can’t wait to see what Taylor Sheridan has come up with next.
